Book Tag – Reading Habits

reading habits

In my blogs, I usually talk about books that I like (or dislike), but today I wanted to do something different. So I decided it’s time for a book tag! I found these questions over at Dreamlandbookblog. As you might have deduced from this post’s title, these questions all relate to reading habits. Let’s begin!

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

My bed! Up until literally this week we didn’t have a proper couch, so it was either my bed or a dining chair. But our couches were delivered two days ago, so I’ll be lounging and reading in the living room more often now!

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Bookmarks! I used to use random pieces of paper, because I kept losing my bookmarks, but I now have a big collection of them. My favourite one is a Ravenclaw bookmark, my Hogwarts House.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

I always have to finish a chapter. And then I tell myself to read one more. And one more… The only time I can stop in the middle of a chapter, is when there’s an “emergency”, like when I hear one of my cats vomiting!

Do you eat or drink while reading?

I only drink while reading. After all, when you read for long stretches of time, it’s important to stay hydrated! But I always put my book somewhere safe so I can’t spill my drink on it. And I don’t like eating while reading because I hate greasy fingers on the pages.

Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

Nope. No. Never. I want as little distractions as possible.

One book at a time or several at once?

One at a time. With some of them (looking at you, A Song of Ice and Fire!), all the characters and plot lines are confusing enough as it is, reading several books at once would make it impossible to keep track of everything that’s happening.

Reading at home or everywhere?

I want to focus 100 percent on the story and writing, so no reading in the train or at bus stops for me. The noise would be too distracting.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently in my head. But when there’s a sentence I can’t make sense of rightaway, I mouth it along.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

Noooooo! But I have to confess I sometimes glance at the right side of the page while I’m still on the left side, especially when I see it’s the end of the chapter and it ends with a short sentence. And then I’m immediately angry because I spoiled myself…

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

My books are holy, so I try to avoid breaking the spine, but it happens sometimes.

Do you write in your books?

Nope, I want my books in pristine condition.

When do you find yourself reading? Morning, afternoon, evening, whenever you get the chance or all the time?

Usually late in the evening, when my boyfriend is asleep and everything is quiet (except for his snoring, that is, hah!).

What is your best setting to read in?

Anything that is quiet, with the lights slightly dimmed. And preferably a scented candle!

What do you do first – Read or Watch?

I prefer to read first, but that’s not always the case. With Game of Thrones for example I watched the first season of the TV show and then read all the books. Same with The Lord of the Rings, where I watched the first movie and then read the books before watching the other movies.

What form do you prefer? Audiobook, E-book or physical book?

Physical books all the way. Audiobooks just aren’t for me, I think. And it’s just so much fun to actually hold a book, turn the pages and then put it on display on your shelves!

Do you have a unique habit when you read?

I don’t think so…?

Do book series have to match?

Yes! I hate when the covers don’t match, or when the books aren’t the same size. In one case, that meant visiting 10 different bookstores to find the third part of a trilogy in the edition that matched the other 2 books that I already owned. But I found it! In another case, I bought myself the first book of a series, then put the second one on my wishlist for my birthday… and it was a slightly larger edition…

What are your reading habits? Do you agree or disagree with something I listed above? Let me know in the comments! And feel free to do this tag yourself!
