I usually post my Fairyloot unboxing around the 7th of the month, but because of my break last week, I didn’t get around to it. So with a bit of a delay, I present to you… my unboxing of the January 2019 Fairyloot box!
The theme for the January 2019 Fairyloot box was Unbreakable Bonds. As always, the spoiler card (which you can see in the big photo at the top) features this month’s artwork on the back. It’s a beautiful print celebrating friendship designed by Taratjah. It’s not my favourite, I prefer fantasy settings instead of contemporary. But that’s just me and I still appreciate how gorgeous this looks, don’t get me wrong!
Some fandoms I don’t know…
The first item is a cushion cover inspired by The Raven Boys. On one side it features an illustration with (I guess) the main characters of that series, and on the other side there’s a quote that reads “The Trees Speak Latin”. I haven’t read this series, so I have no idea who these characters are and what that quote means… But I love cushions to create a cosy reading nook, so this is still very welcome!
The next item is a candle! I love collecting bookish candles, so it’s fun to find one in my Fairyloot boxes. This one is created by Geeky Clean and inspired by The Infernal Devices, more specifically by Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs. Again, I haven’t read this series and don’t know much about these two… The candle itself is a pale blue-ish grey and smells like tea and sage. I love how clean it smells!
Next up we have another item inspired by a book I haven’t read yet. (This is a theme with this box, so many books I haven’t read…). It’s inspired by Lia and Pauline’s friendship in The Remnant Chronicles and made by The Tea Leaf Company. It’s not tea though, but hot chocolate! Salted caramel hot chocolate, to be precise. I wouldn’t survive winter without hot chocolate and I can’t wait to try this. I estimate this tin contains about enough cocoa powder for 4-5 mugs. Now I just have to hide it from my equally chocolate-addicted boyfriend!
… and some that I do know
And at last we have an item for a book I did read… A woodmark inspired by Sam and Frodo in The Lord of the Rings! Let’s be honest, Sam is the real MVP in that series and Frodo would be lost without him. The woodmark (for those of you who don’t know, a woodmark is a bookmark made out of a tin sheet of wood) was created by Ink and Wonder and the quote reads “There is some good in this world and it’s worth fighting for”. Notice how Sting is glowing, the bag of Lembas bread and the Phial of Galadriel. I love these details!
The next item is inspired by the Three Dark Crowns series and the friendship between Jules and Arsinoe. I read the first book last year, but I’m not sure yet whether I’m going to read the rest. Anyway, this item is a lip balm made by Book and Nook. It has mint and violet, making it soft and fresh. Fun fact: when you put this on, at first it seems like every other lip balm ever, but after a minute or so, you start feeling the sharp freshness of the mint. It feels funny, but not unpleasant.
And finally, the last “big” item is a hair band inspired by Six of Crows. This is one of my favourite series and although I don’t often wear hair accessories, I’m still really happy with it. And I might have to start wearing it anyway, because I love the Dregs. Just look at the illustrations by FictionTea Designs! I already had a Six of Crows beanie, and now I have something to put on my head when the weather is nice as well!
Extra, extra!
Those were the big items for the January 2019 Fairyloot box, but there’s more! First of all, we have the tarot themed trading cards. Those were first included in the December box and featured Cassian and Amren from A Court of Thorns and Roses. This time, it’s Feyre and Azriel’s turn! Azriel is one of my favourite characters in that series, so I’m super happy. The man deserves more fan love! I’m pretty sure next month’s cards will feature Rhysand and Mor, so we have the entire Inner Circle.
There were also two postcards to promote upcoming books. The first is Once and Future, a scifi adaptation of King Arthur, with a female reincarnation of Arthur. It’s coming out in March and I’m already looking forward to it! The second one is The Black Coats, about a gang that has been exacting vengeance on man who have hurt girls and women. This one is already available (since earlier this week, if I’m not mistaken) and it sounds interesting!
The book
And finally, the one thing you’ve all been waiting for! The featured book of the January 2019 Fairyloot is… Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye! This was on my list of books I was looking forward to and is about Sora and Daemon, who are about to graduate as ninja-style warriors tasked with protecting the kingdom when they discover a dangerous plot threatening that very kingdom. With their superiors not believing them, they must risk their lives to stop this enemy. I’m reading this right now and so far it’s really good!
The book comes with lila sprayed edges and is actually signed by the author! There’s also a letter from Evelyn Skye with character art on the back. And as always, there’s a bookmark featuring this month’s artwork and the Fairyscoop newsletter.
And so we have reached the bottom of the January 2019 Fairyloot box. It had some great items, although I wasn’t familiar with many of these fandoms. If I had to pick, I’d say the hot chocolate is my favourite item, followed by the lip balm.
